PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program

St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center

Program Description

Located in the heart of Phoenix, Arizona, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center (SJHMC) is a 587 bed not-for-profit academic teaching hospital that provides a wide range of health, social, and support services, with special advocacy for the poor and under-served. St. Joseph’s is a nationally recognized center for quality quaternary care, medical education, and research. SJHMC is home to the internationally renowned Barrow Neurological and Norton Thoracic Institutes and also offers a Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and a Level I Trauma Center certified by the American College of Surgeons. Norton Thoracic Institute at SJHMC is home to one of the busiest lung transplant programs in the United States. The lung transplant program, which launched in April 2007, cares for approximately 1,000 post-transplant patients and ranks in the top 5 in the nation for overall lung transplant volume. We consistently rank as one of the top hospitals for neurology and neurosurgery by U.S. News and World Report. The emergency department treats in excess of 70,000 patients a year. The hospital has a 72 bed, level IV Neonatal ICU and over 100 adult ICU beds split between the Neurology ICU, Medical ICU, Surgical ICU, Trauma ICU, and Cardiothoracic ICU. SJHMC is a Joint Commission Certified Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center, Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) Center, and holds Advanced Certification in Perinatal Care. SJHMC is also an American College of Cardiology Chest Pain PCI accredited site. These services draw complex patients and, as a resident at St. Joseph’s, you will be an integral part of these medical services.

Welcome Message from Program Director

On behalf of the Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center Pharmacy Department and the Pharmacy Residency Programs, we would like to welcome you. We are committed to providing traditional and innovative therapies and ensure optimal patient care while upholding the mission of CommonSpirit Health. We are dedicated to providing an exceptional residency training program that includes diverse and variable learning experiences in a multitude of practice areas. Our program provides the pharmacy resident with an array of opportunities to advance their pharmacy experience through participation in patient care, clinical education, and collaboration with other health-care providers.

As you embark on your professional pharmacy career, it is our goal to ensure a successful transition from student to independent clinical pharmacy practitioner throughout the residency year. There may be specific practice areas that you will focus on more than others, but our overall purpose is to provide you the opportunity to develop new clinical skills and build upon your pharmacy practice knowledge base. Furthermore, the mentorship provided by our exceptional clinical pharmacy team will help foster your growth and development in order to achieve your professional goals.

Your upcoming year of residency will be challenging and will require a great deal of dedication, motivation, and perseverance; but we are confident that your commitment of time, talent, and energy will assist you in completing all requirements of the residency program. The residency learning process is meant to provide various challenges, but as you overcome and succeed at these, you will obtain invaluable experiential training that will propel you as a practitioner. These experiences will also prepare you for success in your professional career. We will strive to assist you in any way we can in order for you to succeed in your residency training. We look forward to working closely with you over the next year to partner with you for a successful, meaningful, and positive pharmacy residency experience.

Our Community

Phoenix is the fifth largest city in the country, and also is home to teams in three major professional sports. Phoenix supports a plethora of local restaurants in a number of vibrant entertainment districts; although not surprisingly, southwestern cuisine gets top marks from visitors. An abundance of concert halls, stadiums, and arenas also attract a wide selection of top artists and live shows to complement our local art and culture community. Phoenix is just a short drive from majestic mountains and lakes offering every kind of recreational option, including skiing (water and snow), boating, fishing, hiking, and camping. With all this to offer, it is no wonder why the "Valley of the Sun" is one of the country's most desirable places to live, work, and play.
