Become the nurse you’ve always envisioned.

National Nurse Residency Program

We are excited to welcome new nurses to a nationally standardized, evidence-based program designed to support newly licensed registered nurses (New Graduate RNs) and those with less than 12 months RN experience as they transition safely, effectively, and confidently into their careers. Our year long National Nurse Residency Program (NNRP) blends orientation with in-person and virtual learning to help you build the skills needed to thrive as an exceptional nurse.

As you move from the classroom to the clinical environment, our NNRP is here to walk beside you every step of the way. Through mentorship, career coaching, and a hands-on standardized curriculum, you’ll gain the confidence and experience to succeed. Our leaders and mentors are committed not only to providing meaningful teaching moments but also to celebrating your growth as you step into the nursing role you’ve worked so hard to achieve.

Evidence-based curriculum

Nurse Residents take part in a 12-month, evidence-based transition-to-practice program, based on the ANA scope and standards. With dedicated preceptors, supportive mentors, and site coordinators, you’ll gain a strong foundation to grow as a confident, nursing professional.

Our nurse residency program is designed around the 70-20-10 model: 70% hands-on learning, 20% coaching and mentoring, and 10% e-learning and workshops. We have a clinical curriculum specific to hiring units and professional development content that includes social determinants of health and strategies for communicating with patients’ loved ones, to provide new nurses with a well-rounded experience.

Your future in nursing starts here

With multiple cohorts beginning throughout the year at various locations, you'll have the flexibility to start when the time is right for you. You can select the hospital and department where your skills and passions best align to serve your community.

Our year-long Nurse Residency Program is designed to support your transition from student to professional nurse through ongoing education, mentorship, clinical development, and peer connection. Across our 158 hospitals, you'll discover countless opportunities to grow your confidence, strengthen your clinical expertise, and build a meaningful career alongside colleagues who share our mission, vision, and values to improve the health of the people we serve.

Image of a nurse

“We were a team of new grads in a unique, shared experience, and supported each other through this time of transition and immense growth. The NNRP recognized we came from various backgrounds and life experiences, and allowed us to shine as individuals while ensuring we all received the preparation needed to be successful in our new role as RNs. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to be part of the NNRP and will always look back on this time and smile about how far we all have come since our first day together.”

– Catherine, National Resident RN

FAQs

  • Applicants who have less than 12 months of RN experience.

Applicants who are graduating and anticipate obtaining RN licensure at least two weeks prior to the start of the upcoming cohort are eligible for the program as well.

Experienced RNs (12+ months by the cohort start date) who are seeking a nursing position in a new unit are not eligible for the program. Please apply to a nursing position with us at click here.

For experienced RNs, if a unit can take a New to Specialty RN, the unit leaders will work with facility & specialty educators to create an orientation plan to set you up for success on your new unit.

  • Yes, it is not required to have passed the NCLEX at time of application.

  • According to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, nurses who have a compact license can work in another compact state indefinitely, “as long as you maintain legal residency in the state that issued your multistate license, and you remain in good standing. If you were to take an action (while practicing in another NLC state or otherwise) which would change your legal residency status, then you have given up legal residency in that home state and you must now apply for license by endorsement in the new state of residence. The new license issued will replace the former license. For example, a nurse has legal residency in Arizona and practices temporarily in Colorado for six months on the Arizona multistate license. While the nurse is practicing in Colorado, her Arizona driver’s license expires. Rather than renewing the Arizona driver’s license, the nurse obtains a Colorado driver’s license. Because a Colorado driver’s license is only issued to a Colorado resident, the nurse has now become a Colorado resident unintentionally. Nurses must be careful not to take actions that would change their state of legal residency, when practicing in another state where they temporarily reside.” For more information regarding a compact license, please visit: https://www.ncsbn.org/compacts.page.

  • You will need to submit a completed application for each cohort that you are interested in.

  • You will receive an automated e-mail confirming that your application has been submitted.

  • Unfortunately, the application window cannot be extended and must be submitted through CommonSpirit Health’s online applicant system (commonspirit.careers). We recommend allowing ample time to complete your application and applying early once the application period begins.

  • The talent acquisition team will review all applications for completeness. Those selected for interviews will be contacted by a member of our talent acquisition team.

  • Experienced nurses who are transitioning to a new specialty will not be accepted to join the NNRP cohort. If selected, experienced nurses will be hired directly into a unit, and offered an individualized orientation plan, created in partnership with facility & specialty educators.
