Compassion

Satwinder S.
California
RN
Satwinder showed exceptional compassion and leadership during a difficult time for a colleague. One of our nurses experienced the sudden death of her only grandson, whom she was raising. On the day of the funeral, Joyce's family vehicle was totaled on the way to the service. Thankfully, there were no injuries. Knowing that Joyce returned to work earlier than she probably should have to support her family, Satwinder discovered that Joyce was utilizing rideshare to report for duty. Satwinder stepped in without hesitation. He loaned her his personal vehicle so she could keep working and stay stable during an overwhelming loss. This was not a small gesture. It required trust, coordination, and personal sacrifice. It ensured she had a reliable way to get to work and helped reduce one layer of stress during an already devastating period. His action went far beyond what we expect from a shift manager. He recognized a teammate in a crisis and responded with practical support that had an immediate impact on her well-being and ability to stay connected to her team. His kindness strengthened the sense of community in the hospital. Staff have mentioned how his decision set a tone of support and compassion in a time when the team was grieving with her. Satwinder's behavior reflects our values in action. He did more than express sympathy; he offered a solution that allowed a colleague to stay safe, supported, and able to focus on healing and work. This is the type of leadership that builds trust and makes a lasting difference.

Nikki R.
South
ER Tech
Nikki always goes the extra mile regardless if it's a coworker or a patient. On 11/11/25 morning the temperature outside was around 50 degrees. There was a lady and her 3 children who came into the ER. They were escaping from a domestic violence situation. No one had shoes on. The children were in T-shirt and shorts. The baby had on a T-shirt and a dirty diaper. Nikki immediately got the family some food, drink and warm blankets. She ensured everyone had on slipper socks to help warm them up. Nikki will give you the shirt off her back if you needed it. Her kindness and compassion is truly a blessing to us all.

Michael "Dalton" M.
South
Maintenance
The story below is told by our Director of Operations at Twin City Medical Center that involved Michael "Dalton" Marion from our FM Ops team. I wanted to share a wonderful example of compassion and dedication shared with me from one of my nursing team members. "On September 4, 2025, a staff member was working when the call light in Room 2 would not turn off. Corey called maintenance, and the on-call technician arrived to fix it. While the technician's name was not noted, he successfully resolved the issue and left. Approximately 20 minutes later, he returned to the room. He explained that while he was fixing the call light, he overheard staff speaking with the patient, who expressed that she was scared. He then kindly asked if he could pray with her. The staff member confirmed that if the patient was comfortable with it, it would be absolutely fine. Before the staff member left for the day, the patient commented on how much that gesture meant to her." This act truly exemplifies going above and beyond for our patients. We are incredibly grateful for such compassionate and dedicated team members.
Inclusion

Andrew G.
National
Andrew has consistently created a workplace where every voice matters. He seeks input from staff at all levels and ensures decisions reflect diverse perspectives. He takes the time to understand individual experiences, creating an environment where differences are valued and celebrated. Under his leadership, teams feel empowered to contribute without fear, and collaboration thrives across departments. His commitment to inclusion is evident in the policies he supports, the mentoring he provides, and the culture he fosters daily. Andrew does not just talk about inclusion, he lives it, making it a cornerstone of how the organization operates.

Silvia B.
South
During the work day, at BSLMC in the Bertner tower, the fire alarm went off near the Orange Elevators. This was right next to the International Services department. The entire team needed to evacuate as the overhead announcement asked all individuals to clear the area due to a mechanical room fire. There is a member of the International Services team, Carlos Aguilar, who has a prosthetic leg and is not able to move quickly. As the team exited our office suite, Patricia Benitez and her colleague Silvia Bloching, waited for Carlos. When they approached the elevators - they realized those were closed and being on the 7th floor, they needed to take the stairs all the way down to the first floor to exit the building. Carlos tried to walk down the stairs but in seeing his agony in the physical challenge, Patricia and Silvia, together, carried Carlos down the stairs together so that they could safely exit the building without leaving anyone behind. At a time when Patricia and Silvia could prioritize their own personal safety and well-being, they chose to put themselves at risk to help another person - a friend and a colleague - to ensure his safety and well-being was considered in spite of the physical challenges he faced.

Lucille V.
Mountain
PT, DPT
Lucille is one of those incredible people who naturally makes everyone around her better. She consistently goes above and beyond to ensure our patients receive the very best care possible, not just meeting their needs, but anticipating them. Her compassion, creativity, and dedication shine through everything she does. Lucille is always looking for ways to improve the patient experience and make life a little brighter for those in the hospital. One of her thoughtful projects has been creating small goody bags for patients who have been hospitalized for an extended time, filled with things like games, adult coloring books, or other items to keep them entertained and uplifted. It is such a simple gesture, but it brings so much comfort and joy to our patients. She also played a key role in ensuring that families of patients at the end of life receive a meaningful token, a small glass bottle containing an EKG strip from their loved one. It is touching, personal way to help families cherish a memory during an incredibly difficult time. Lucille is not only devoted to her patients but also to her colleagues. She is always smiling, encouraging, and ready to lend a helping hand to the nursing staff and other team members. Even on the busiest days, she radiates positivity and constantly finds ways to make everyone's shift run smoother. Lucille truly embodies our CommonSpirit values. Her kindness, generosity, and genuine spirit make her an inspiration to all of us. We are so lucky to have her as part of our team.
Integrity

De Anne R.
National
SPHR, SHRM-SCP
When I think about integrity in action, Deanne Russell is the first person who comes to mind. While she truly excels in many of the nomination Categories, her consistent display of integrity makes her stand out as an exemplary leader. Deanne sets a wonderful example for all of us. She has a unique ability to look at situations from perspectives others might miss. She truly listens to what everyone has to say, taking the time to understand and work through challenges with each of us thoughtfully. This approach ensures that her guidance is always fair and well-considered. She is warm, inviting, approachable and fair. She leads with the best in mind for everyone and is always looking for better, more efficient and reasonable ways to accomplish a task. What's particularly impactful is Deanne's genuine care for her staff. It's clear that she takes a personal interest in each of us. Despite her incredibly busy schedule, she consistently makes time for individual meetings, sending personal cards, recognizing accomplishments and acknowledging a job well done. These actions demonstrate her commitment to the team's well-being and growth. Deanne also excels at creating an inclusive environment. Whether it be on a project or in one of the "Take 45" sessions, that she facilitates for the team, she ensures that every team member feels engaged and has a voice. She is consistently approachable and always ready to listen, offering valuable guidance, especially when we're navigating difficult situations. In every interaction, Deanne acts with honesty, compassion, kindness and a strong moral compass. Her actions build trust and encourage a positive, respectful atmosphere for the entire our team. For all these reasons and many more, I wholeheartedly nominate Deanne Russell for her outstanding Integrity. I have had several great leaders in my career, but Deanne is by far the best.

Mary Beth K.
Mountain
MTH, BCC
Since I met Mary Beth, I have been moved and inspired by her integrity. As Chaplain at St. Anthony North, she has the unenviable responsibility of providing a sacred, dignified burial for all babies who die before birth in our market. The heaviness of the task and the sheer work load of coordinating these burials would be enough to bring one to tears. But even beyond the normal work, Mary Beth has had to create a workflow for our hospital (and then our market) that eases the grief of the mothers and families experiencing these losses. When met with repeated obstacles, Mary Beth never waivers in doing what she believes is right for these families. Knowing there are large systems at play and many different departments, Mary Beth puts these families first, going above and beyond what is expected of her to ensure those who are grieving can feel the consolation of a sacred burial in a timely fashion. In the absence of a Mission leader, Mary Beth undertook a lot of this work alone, refusing to allow the processes and systems to fail these grieving mothers. She has fine-tuned processes, offered trainings on perinatal grief, trained her colleagues at SAN and in other facilities in how best to approach these delicate moments of chaplaincy, and coordinated the burial well over one hundred of these babies this year. When others seemed to be exasperated and wanting to give up, Mary Beth never considered it. She knew the immense toll that complications and disruptions in the process could cause these grieving mothers, and chose to put their needs above her own and the hospital's comfort. Mary Beth, in this way, embodies our value of Integrity. She has shown and continues to show courage in the face of systems that disenfranchise these mothers and families, choosing instead to offer comfort and support in their grief, no matter the cost. I, and countless mothers, are grateful for Mary Beth's leadership in this area.

Stacy S.
California
RN,BSN
Stacy is incredible. She is the nurse who is consistently kind, willing to collaborate, and embodies the truest helper a human can be. She is like a cone of vanilla ice cream, making every day, every task, and interactions with seemingly every patient, better! Stacy covers her coworkers' shifts and leaves early when the census is low, as needed. Her eyes and smile convey a sense that everything really is going to be alright. Working alongside Stacy at Mercy Mt. Shasta, first when she was an ICU nurse and now as a case manager, has been amazing throughout my eight years here. Patients adore her, as do her coworkers. Without hesitation, she can be relied on to make the kindest decision for her patients. She combines kindness with integrity and compassion, delivering truth with gentleness. She provides support to patients or family members, if needed, to help them receive news about their health in a way that is acceptable. Some patients and families are receiving the worst news in a hospital, and while the delivery of truth is important, it must be done in a way that optimally serves them. Stacy Shipman is the standard for kindness in healthcare. If I were to be a patient, Stacy is the nurse I'd pray would take care of me.
Excellence

Donna H.
California
Servsafe
For years, you could walk down the dietary hallway around 3:00 pm and smell the cookies coming out of the oven. I never knew who was behind those great smells. I only knew that someone from dietary baked cookies daily for the Post Partum families to celebrate their new blessings. Fast forward to 2025, my catering manager retired and I was informed that Donna Harvell would be my new caterer. She came into Administration to introduce herself and was exuding a happy, positive vibe that could not be missed. To my pleasant surprise, I learned that Donna was the one doing the baking all these years. I have now seen firsthand how much of herself she gives to her job. Not once has she shown up without giving so much extra. She always greets you with a warm smile, always puts extra touches on table set-ups (decorations for every holiday or flowers for an added touch), always pays extra attention to detail (clean linens, silverware, glasses), always sets up attractive buffets, adding different heights, special bowls, beautifully arranged platters. There is not a missed opportunity in the presentations. Most of all, she does this with sheer joy. Donna's dedication to our dietary department sets a very high standard. Whether we are hosting a physician recruiting lunch, a community partner meeting, or an internal meeting, I know Donna will show up and show off her amazing skills. As someone who plans many meetings, it is a sign of excellence when you have trust and confidence in a co-worker, knowing she is giving it all for our company. If in my short time working with her, I see her level of excellence, I can confidently guess that those she has worked with the past 19 years can offer more testimony that she has raised the bar at SJMC.

Carlos R.
National
Carlos consistently goes far above and beyond his job description to ensure that employees and patients are as safe as possible. Carlos is a Director, Facilities Management. For most of 2025, he volunteered to go to a sister hospital in Los Angeles (a 3 hr drive from our facility), to ensure that their facilities management was able to rebuild safely after a massive audit. He balanced working at our extremely busy facility and rebuilding their extremely busy facility for several months, with the goal of developing a sustainable leadership structure and safety processes at the other hospital. He was able to base those processes on the successful ones that he enacted at SBMC. Carlos did this drive to Los Angeles 2-3 days/week in addition to managing multiple departments at SBMC all week. In addition, he volunteered with SBMC's family focus center all summer and took multiple groups of underprivileged children on field trips with other chaperones, ensuring that the children in our community had an enriching summer. It's an honor to work with someone who is so highly skilled, well organized, compassionate, and focused on building up everyone that he works with. Our hospital system would be a million times more productive if we had 10 more people like Carlos working here!

Joe D.
California
OT
There was an elderly patient who came in for confusion but was able to converse and get to the edge of the bed by himself. After the weekend, he had declined significantly, needing a lot of help to move around in bed and unable to converse much. The nurse, who had not worked with him the previous days, believed this was his baseline due to his diagnosis. Joe, the occupational therapist assigned to the patient for the day, had also never worked with the patient before. He took extra time to read the chart notes from a few days prior (as opposed to just the previous day, which is the general standard) and noticed that the patient had been much more active, indicating a backslide. Joe showed human kindness by taking the time to educate the nurse, explaining that this was not the patient's baseline. He went into detail about what the patient could do before, rather than hurrying along to the next patient. This demonstrates the 'validate and verify' aspect of a questioning attitude, a part of the STAR tool. Escalating this as a change in status ensured the patient received appropriate treatment. This is a small example of how Joe goes above and beyond for each patient on a daily basis.
Collaboration

Angel C.
National
Angel works with urgency to help every department. He is patient focused and kind in every instance. His department is a service department and bears the brunt of many immediate demands. Angel listens carefully and always prioritizes the patient. I so appreciate Angel's responsiveness and the positive impact he has on this hospital. I have called Angel at home after hours to ask for help and he instantly directs his team to truly come to help. One time we had a patient who needed a life saving cryoamputation, but we could not get the right kind of dry ice. We needed someone to break apart the block of ice in a safe way so that we could use it for the patient. Angel directed his guys to the ICU within minutes and his quick actions helped keep a man alive. Angel is humble but we in the ICU want him to know we appreciate his collaboration and sincere attention to our patients.

Morinsola K.
California
MS, CCLS
I am incredibly honored and humbled to nominate Morinsola, our exceptional Child Life Specialist. Morinsola is, without a doubt, the most compassionate individual I have had the privilege to meet. Her unwavering dedication to our patients and her profound ability to instill a child's perspective into the healthcare team are unparalleled. Morinsola consistently acts as a powerful advocate for our patients, ensuring their voices are heard and their needs are met, even in the most challenging circumstances. This is particularly evident in her invaluable work with our One Legacy cases, where she diligently ensures that families' wishes are not only honored but also deeply understood and respected throughout the entire process. Beyond critical care, Morinsola champions strategies to minimize the need for sedation during procedural sedations. By actively involving the child and their family, patiently explaining procedures, and fostering a sense of understanding and control, she has remarkably enabled some of our patients to undergo complex tests like MRIs without the need for sedation. This not only reduces potential risks but also empowers our young patients, turning potentially traumatic experiences into more manageable ones. Morinsola's commitment to excellence extends far beyond direct patient care. A recent incident vividly illustrates her exceptional character and dedication to upholding the highest standards of professional practice, not just for our patients, but for the entire healthcare team. When she witnessed unprofessional behavior and conduct from some nursing students on more than one occasion, Morinsola didn't hesitate. She took the immediate initiative to directly address the students, clearly articulated expectations, and subsequently followed up with leadership. Her astute judgment recognized that these actions did not align with the high expectations and standards of practice that she embodies and tirelessly promotes. Her courage to act, to intervene, and to help improve situations that fall short of our professional ideals speaks volumes about her integrity and her commitment to fostering a positive and respectful learning and healing environment for everyone. Morinsola is an extraordinary individual whose compassion, advocacy, and unwavering commitment to excellence elevate the care we provide and the environment in which we work. She is a distinct asset to our team, and I wholeheartedly recommend her for this well-deserved recognition.

Josh W.
California
While rounding in the Acute Rehab department, Josh Whidden noticed a patient struggling to apply the brake on her wheelchair. Many patients in Acute Rehab face significant mobility challenges following strokes or brain injuries, and even simple tasks can become frustrating obstacles to independence. Josh sat down in the wheelchair himself and immediately realized how difficult the brake was to engage. Instead of simply acknowledging the issue and moving on, he promised the patient he would find a solution. He walked straight to the Engineering department in search of a fix, asking the team if they had a ¾-inch PVC pipe. Fortunately, they did. After cutting a 7-inch piece, Josh returned to the patient’s room and slid it over the existing brake lever. The extension created additional leverage, making the brake dramatically easier to apply. The patient sat down, pressed the brake, and smiled. Because of this simple yet meaningful innovation, Acute Rehab now keeps a supply of ¾-inch PVC tubing on hand for any wheelchair in need of the modification.
