PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program

Mercy Medical Center Redding

Program Description

The Residency in Pharmacy at Dignity Health Mercy Medical Center Redding (DHMMCR) is an approximately 55-week experiential learning process designed to give the resident comprehensive training in providing pharmaceutical care in an integrated health system. DHMMCR provides a learning experience that blends core rotations with longitudinal rotations. Core rotations provide the resident a learning experience that integrates multiple services within a single core. By blending the core rotation experience with a longitudinal rotation, this structure offers a realistic learning opportunity that teaches time management skills.

Dignity Health Mercy Medical Center Redding (DHMMCR) is a 266-bed Level II Trauma Center, acute care hospital that, combined with a critical access hospital in Mount Shasta and a community hospital in Red Bluff, forms the Dignity Health North State region. We serve a culturally diverse patient population. Our medical center is community based and is a local center for cardiac procedures, regional cancer services, and contains a Level IIl NICU. We are affiliated with University of the Pacific, Simpson University, and the University of California - Davis and serve as a training site for pharmacy IPPE/APPE students, nursing students, and a family medicine residency.

Program Highlights

Centers of Clinical Excellence:
Our residents train in a regional referral center with specialized capabilities that serve the entire Northern California region:

  • Advanced Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center: Participate in advanced neuro-critical care and pharmacotherapy management within a facility formally recognized for high-tier stroke interventions.
  • Level II Trauma Center: As one of only two Level II trauma facilities north of Sacramento, we provide a high-volume, high-acuity environment for emergency and surgical pharmacy practice.
  • Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU): Gain specialized experience in neonatal pharmacotherapy at the only medical center providing this advanced level of intensive newborn care in the region.
  • Accredited Chest Pain Center: Work alongside cardiology teams at Redding’s only accredited center for rapid heart attack intervention, focusing on acute cardiovascular protocols.

Commitment to Quality, Safety, and Reputation:
We are proud to be recognized for our long-standing adherence to the highest standards of medical practice:

  • CDPH Antimicrobial Stewardship Honor Roll: We are proud to be recognized by the California Department of Public Health for our leadership and proactive efforts in antimicrobial stewardship, ensuring optimal antibiotic use and patient safety.
  • American College of Surgeons (ACS) Oncology Accreditation: Our Cancer Center has maintained continuous, highest-level accreditation for over 30 years, providing residents with deep exposure to comprehensive oncology care.
  • Cal Hospital Compare Honor Roll: Recognized for "Superior Performance" in patient safety standards and leadership in proactive, evidence-based opioid stewardship.
  • Women’s Choice Award: Nationally recognized for excellence across multi-disciplinary categories including Cancer Care, Heart Care, Emergency Care, Orthopedics, and Patient Safety.

Professional Development and Growth:
We are committed to preparing the next generation of pharmacy leaders through robust educational and career-building opportunities:

  • Unique Interprofessional Environment: Experience a truly collaborative culture where pharmacy residents learn and work side-by-side with our Family Medicine residents. You will act as a medication expert, provide bedside teaching, and engage in joint rounds, fostering a high level of interprofessional trust.
  • Teaching Certificate Program: Enhance your academic portfolio through a formal Teaching Certificate program offering in partnership with the University of the Pacific (UOP). This structured program provides you with the tools to excel as a clinical educator, preceptor, and academic mentor.
  • Early Commit PGY2 Opportunities: As part of the CommonSpirit Health network, our residents have a unique competitive advantage with early commit opportunities to various specialized PGY2 programs within the system.
  • Direct Preceptor Mentorship: Benefit from a low resident-to-preceptor ratio, ensuring you receive individualized mentorship from board-certified clinical specialists who are invested in your career success.
  • "Humankindness" in Practice: As part of the Dignity Health system, our curriculum emphasizes a patient-centered philosophy, teaching you to navigate the intersection of complex clinical pharmacotherapy and the social determinants of health.

Welcome Message from Program Director

Welcome to the PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Program at Dignity Health Mercy Medical Center Redding. We are delighted you are exploring our ASHP-accredited program and considering our community as the next step in your professional evolution.

At Mercy, our clinical environment is as vast as the landscape that surrounds us. As the primary medical hub for the entire North State, our hospital functions as the region’s critical safety net. This means your training here will be inherently rigorous; you will be exposed to a volume and complexity of high-acuity cases that is rare for a community-based setting. We believe that by immersing you in this level of practice, we provide the ultimate foundation for your future as a high-performing clinician.

However, we also believe that your professional development is inseparable from your personal well-being. We have intentionally built a program that balances this clinical intensity with a deep commitment to mentorship and community. We want you to be challenged, but we also want you to be energized. Here, you are not just a trainee; you are a vital contributor to our care team. We pride ourselves on a culture of "humankindness," where our preceptors are as committed to your individual growth as they are to the standard of care we provide to our patients.

Whether your long-term goal is to pursue specialized PGY-2 training, move into an acute care role, or step into a leadership position, we are here to ensure you have the tools, clinical depth, and confidence to succeed. We invite you to join our pharmacy family and experience the unique, balanced, and high-impact training that Dignity Health Mercy Medical Center Redding can provide.

Sincerely,
Tavleen K. Takhar, Pharm.D., APh

Our Community

At Dignity Health Mercy Medical Center Redding, we know that your residency is more than just a year of clinical training; it is a pivotal chapter in your life. We are proud to call Redding home—a city where you can tackle complex patient cases in a Level II Trauma Center by day and explore the "Capital of the North State" by night.

A Premier Medical Hub: Redding is the largest city in a 100-mile radius, serving as the medical epicenter for the entire North State. Because of this, our pharmacy residents see a higher volume and complexity of cases than they would in many larger urban hospitals. You won't just be a resident in a small town; you will be a vital part of a high-acuity medical team, gaining a depth of clinical experience that is both rare and unmatched.

The Lifestyle Advantage: Redding is defined by a community that thrives on being active. When you aren't in the pharmacy, you’ll find yourself in the heart of Northern California’s premier playground:

  • The Trail Capital: With over 200 miles of trails within 15 miles of the city, your "commute" to nature is nonexistent. From mountain biking at the Swasey Recreation Area to morning jogs on the Sacramento River Trail, wellness is built into our city’s DNA.
  • 300 Days of Sunshine: Forget the coastal fog. Redding is the sunniest spot in California, meaning your weekend adventures—whether it's paddleboarding on the river or visiting the iconic Sundial Bridge—rarely rained out.
  • The Ultimate Basecamp: Redding’s central location makes it the perfect home base. You are just a short drive from the rugged Pacific Coast, the majestic Mount Shasta, or the volcanic wonders of Lassen Volcanic National Park.

Built for the Future: We understand the demands of a rigorous residency, which is why Redding’s practical benefits are such an asset:

  • Cost-of-Living: Compared to the skyrocketing costs of major California metro areas, Redding offers a significantly more attainable cost of living. Here, your stipend goes further, allowing you to enjoy a higher quality of life, better housing options, and the financial freedom to explore the North State.
  • A Growing Culture: Beyond the outdoors, you’ll enjoy a burgeoning food and craft brewery scene, farm-to-table dining, and a community that deeply values the high-level care you provide.

Join us at Dignity Health Mercy Medical Center Redding, where you will find the perfect balance: the rigorous, evidence-based practice of a top-tier medical system nestled within a community that values you as both a clinician and an individual. We invite you to step into a residency that demands your best, prioritizes your professional success, and offers you the rare opportunity to grow your expertise in one of the most beautiful regions in the country.
