Responsibilities

Job Summary / Purpose

This position contributes to the mission and vision of CHI Health by augmenting nursing care to patients in the Emergency Department, and in other areas of the hospital when assigned.

Essential Key Job Responsibilities

  1. Functions within the scope of practice of a Paramedic as defined within Nebraska and Iowa state regulations and listed in the Approved Skills and Procedures for Licensed EMS Providers document. This position does take a patient assignment, but must be over seen by an RN.
    1. Provides patient care and performs patient care procedures:
    2. EKG
    3. Accu checks
    4. CPR
    5. Crutches
    6. Ace bandage application
    7. Splint application
    8. Wound cleansing 
    9. Dressing 
    10. Immobilization
    11. Medication administration under medical/nursing direction (IM, IV, oral ASA and Tylenol, oral analgesics) (not to include high risk medication including titratable medications) 
    12. IV insertions, IO insertion and EJ insertions
    13. Foley catheterization
    14. Intubation (only at the direct request and supervision by an ED physician who is present in the room).
    15. Re-assessment of patient condition and status. 
    16. Documentation on the EMR (vital signs, assessments, medications, etc.)
    17. Independent transportation to inpatient units
    18. Oxygen administration 
    19. Cardiac monitoring and rhythm interpretation
    20. Spinal stabilization and immobilization
    21. Extrication of patients
    22. Responds to code and trauma activations in the ED and, when requested, on the hospital campus and assisted with delegation from the primary RN.
    23. Provides patient transportation within the Emergency Department and on the hospital campus as requested.
    24. WILL NOT perform triage, initial patient assessment, provide dismissal instructions, administer antibiotics or Thrombolytics and other high-risk medications as determined by facility policy.
    25. Consults as needed with supervising nurses and ED physicians regarding patient condition and treatment.
    26. Maintains strict patient confidentiality.
    27. Maintains professional and positive attitude to staff and patients.
    28. Follows policies and procedures of CHI Health.
    29. Maintains a customer-service, patient-focused environment.
    30. Participates in QI activities and efforts to improve patient care processes.
    31. Advises ED Medical Director and leadership regarding any practice issues or patient care concerns.
    32. Attends staff meetings, in-services, and other departmental meetings as requested.
    33. Provides evidence of on-going continuing education activities and maintains current educational requirements.
    34. Other duties as assigned by leader and organization within the scope of practice of the paramedic. 
    35. Able to assume care for patients with acuity levels of 3,4,5 under the supervision of a RN after initial assessment of chief  complaint is completed.
    36. Provides patient care and performs patient care procedures as listed on the attached Approved Skills and Procedures for Licensed EMS Providers.
    37. Responds to Code 99 and trauma activations in the ED and, when requested, on the hospital campus.
    38. Provides patient transportation within the Emergency Department and on the hospital campus as requested.
    39. Enters patient orders into the hospital computer system when directed.
    40. Assists with obtaining patient demographic and billing information.
    41. Maintains strict patient confidentiality.
    42. Maintains professional and positive attitude at all times to staff and patients.
    43. Follows policies and procedures of CHI Health.
    44. Maintains a customer-service, patient-focused environment.
    45. Advises ED Medical Director and OD-ED regarding any practice issues or patient care concerns.
    46. Attends staff meetings, in-services, and other departmental meetings as requested.
    47. Maintains compliance with licensure and certification requirements.
    48. Provides evidence of on-going continuing education activities.
    49. Other duties as assigned by leader and organization within the scope of practice of the paramedic.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience 

  • Preferred: Previous clinical experience in an Emergency Department or hospital setting is desirable.

Required Licensure and Certifications

  • Required: Must have a valid certificate to function as an EMT-P (EMT-Paramedic) in the state of Nebraska or Iowa.

  • BLS or BLS instructor certification is required upon hire. Acceptable credentialing through the American Heart Association:  Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers. 

  • ACLS or ACLS instructor certification is required within 6 months  Acceptable credentialing through the American Heart Association:  Advanced Cardiac Life Support

  • PALS (Pediatric Cardiac Life Support) or PALS instructor certification required within 6 months. Acceptable credentialing through the American Heart Association:  Pediatric Advanced Life Support.

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Training

  • Must have and maintain active membership on a Rescue Service in the state of Nebraska. This is not required for Iowa.
  • Preferred: Successful completion of a Critical Care Paramedic Training course
