Responsibilities

Job Summary:

As an interdisciplinary team member, conducts occupational therapy activities to improve patient function and prevent disability following disease or injury, and improve patients' ability to reach maximum performance within the limits of his/her capabilities. Provides and coordinates comprehensive occupational rehabilitation care to patients through the proper utilization of evaluation, planning, education, and implementation of a treatment plan in accordance with Occupational Therapy Standards of Practice. Work includes indirect patient care activities such as; documentation, scheduling, family training, attendance at rounds, interaction with the Interdisciplinary Team, participation in staff meetings, ordering supplies, and contributing to continuous quality control and performance improvement.

Incumbents are also accountable for responding effectively to legal, patient rights, safety, maintenance, and emergency situations; participating in continuing education, staff development, self-directed learning and overseeing the performance of and providing performance feedback of staff, aides, students, volunteers as requested.

Refer to attached Addendum for "Lead, Injured Worker Rehabilitation Program OT, Pain Management Program OT" and Lymphedema OT responsibilities and requirements.

Injured Worker Rehabilitation Program: Responsible for the provision of direct patient care to sub-acute hand/upper extremity patients requiring work conditioning or specialized evaluation of physical capacities/work readiness. This includes evaluation, treatment planning, treatment implementation, and reassessment. It may also include the following indirect patient care activities: documentation; scheduling; physician, employer or vocational services contact; and job site analysis.

Pain Management Program: Responsible for the provision of care to the Pain Management Program patients and other referred patients. This includes evaluation, treatment planning, treatment implementation, and reassessment. It must also include the following indirect patient care activities: documentation; scheduling; physician, employer or vocational services contact; and job site analysis.

Lead: Exercises limited supervision over a group of Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapists. An incumbent performs much the same work as employees in the "core" job (Occupational Therapist) and participate in the day-to-day operations of the work unit, with "lead" work comprising a relatively minor portion of the overall job. The work requires knowledge of the policies, procedures and equipment applicable to OT/PT/ST.

Essential Function:

  • Performs patient assessment/data collection, interprets findings and formulates treatment plans.
  • Reviews medical record/documentation prior to initial evaluation to familiarize self with patient’s history and obtains necessary information to perform a thorough, quality assessment.
  • Develops Occupational Therapy plan of care to meet established goals and individualized needs of patient/client.
  • Selects and administers assessment tools according to standards as established by profession and department.
  • Implements and updates therapeutic plan of care and treatment based on patient needs throughout patient’s treatment/stay.
  • Implements treatment and conducts treatment program which may include but is not limited to: activities of daily living, transfers, strengthening, range of motion, home evaluation, family training, cognitive training, job analysis/ work preparation, equipment recommendations and ordering.
  • Regularly assesses clinical signs and symptoms to determine effectiveness of treatment, progress of patient towards goals, the need for modifying goals and treatment.
  • Performs treatment according to according to established protocols or accepted clinical standards of practice using a variety of modalities and implements new and innovative treatment approaches.
  • Adheres to most recent treatment plan and documented frequency per evaluation/certification or reassessment/recertification.
  • Initiates discharge from occupational therapy when the patient has received maximum benefit from occupational therapy.
  • Identifies and implements strategies to meet the educational needs of the patient/family/significant others as it relates to Occupational Therapy.
  • Participates in supervision and performance feedback of staff, aides, students, volunteers as requested.
  • Completes all required documentation, in an accurate and thorough manner, of Occupational Therapy treatment in accordance with FHS documentation standard.
  • Utilizes documentation that meets the accepted clinical, hospital and departmental standards and chart review criteria.
  • Completes documentation responsibilities in a timely manner according to hospital and departmental criteria.
  • Participates in chart review process and adjusts practices according to feedback as provided.

Qualifications

Education/Experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited School of Occupational Therapy and completion of Clinical Fieldwork
  • At least three (3) months prior experience in physical disabilities and a broad base of medical surgical knowledge, with case experience with the following: neurological impairments, orthopedic impairments, and critical care that demonstrates attainment of the requisite job knowledge skills/abilities.

Certifications/Licensure:

  • Occupational Therapist: WA (OT:WA)
  • Basic Life Support - CPR (BLS-CPR)
