Responsibilities

This job is responsible, under the direction of the Simulation Center leadership and in conjunction with educators and faculty members, for operating/maintaining all Virginia Mason Franciscan Health (VMFH) simulation equipment, including computers, audio/visual equipment, simulators and other simulation lab equipment. An incumbent also assists with the preparation for, and conducting of, simulation training experiences and other education offerings across VMFH in both a simulation lab and for clinic/hospital settings.


Simulation activities support front line team members, nursing students and residents with hands-on skills training and simulated “real-life” experiences to enhance their confidence and provide real-time human and technological feedback about the development of their psychomotor, assessment, clinical judgment and diagnostic skills. Simulation learning is used to improve technical/functional expertise, problem-solving and decision-making, and/or interpersonal/communications skills. An incumbent is integral to the program’s success and vital to achieving the goal of improving the quality and safety of patient care.
Work requires an understanding of the operation and function of different simulation technologies. Extensive travel between VMFH facilities in Western Washington is also required.

Essential Functions Include:

Simulation Support, Setup and Operation

  • Serves as simulator operator running scenarios with faculty instructors, assuring all equipment is set up for course programs.
  • Prepares manikins and equipment as appropriate to the simulation scenario to create a realistic and safe environment; including filling simulated blood and body fluid chambers, using moulage to reflect the appropriate age and condition of the patient, applying wounds and dressings, and inserting tubes.
  • Operates video recording system (and other audio-visual needs) for use in instructional recording and debriefing sessions.
    Supports/assists in role playing applications, props placement, and moulage set-up to create a realistic virtual healthcare setting.
  • Performs post-simulation activities including operating debriefing equipment, cleaning the relevant facility to include changing linens, cleaning surfaces, draining simulated blood and body fluids from mannequins, and cleaning manikins.
  • Assists instructors and/or faculty with delivery, including practicing scenarios prior to a formal simulation.
  • Remains current with research and trends in health sciences simulation, learning science and instructional technologies.

Technical Support and Training

  • Provides technical assistance, support and training to faculty, staff, and students in use of simulation equipment, as necessary.
  • Assists faculty with the development of new skills modules.
  • Installs new hardware and software on simulation equipment and perform upgrades as necessary; performs operational checks on equipment; interfaces with the equipment manufacturers; consults with technical support; oversees scheduled maintenance.

Simulation Center Maintenance

  • Maintains a clean and safe learning lab environment, including supply room organization.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment and conducts routine inventory updates; establishes and manages inventory, asset tracking, and item check out system.
  • Provides recommendations, within scope of position, for budgeting and purchase of equipment, supplies and materials.
  • Conducts ongoing maintenance of all simulation equipment, including cleaning and repairing; assures that all equipment is maintained in good working order at all times.
  • Maintains record of repairs required and completed.

Other Duties and Administration

  • Provides general support for clinical education program needs as requested; assist with special projects or initiatives as needed.
  • Interfaces with equipment manufacturers regarding equipment troubleshooting and system problems;

Performs related duties as required.


Qualifications

Education/Work Experience Requirements:

  • Associate’s degree (or certified EMT) in health sciences or related field, and two years of related work experience in healthcare, higher education simulation, hospital simulation or similar setting.
  • Previous experience in a simulation lab operating and maintaining simulation equipment or as an EMT, Paramedic or related job is desired.
  • Or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

Licensure/Certification:

  • Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS) is preferred.
