Responsibilities

Position Summary:

The Security Officer ensures that the healthcare enterprise reasonably safe and secure environment. Respond promptly to security emergencies within the hospital or other healthcare settings while maintaining a professional demeanor at all times. Is responsible for documenting all incidents and requests for assistance within the hospital reporting platform. Observes and reports activities and incidents at an assigned site. Preserves order and acts to enforce regulations and policies when assistance is requested by medical staff/employees. The security officer shall support CommonSpirit Health’s strategic plan and the goals and direction of the quality improvement/process improvement activities. It is expected that the security officer will demonstrate behavior consistent with CommonSpirit Health core values and Humankindness.

  1. Protecting staff, patients, and visitors by responding to calls for assistance in a timely and prudent manner. Calls may include incidents such as violent or unruly patients, visitors, crimes committed or in progress, or to emergency codes, and requests for opening doors. Patrol the facility and grounds by foot or vehicle; monitor security alarms and dispatch officers promptly to location(s) where needed; and report unsafe acts or conditions. 

  2.  Knowledge of emergency procedures, equipment, and supplies, including of radios and hospital codes 

  3. Reports HIPAA breaches if witnessed; investigate security breaches, conducts investigations, and writes incident reports. Ensures that all activities are logged. That incident reports are accurately completed that they are clear, concise, legible and submitted in a timely manner. 

  4.  Use appropriate emergency and radio codes in dispatching security officers while knowing hospital campus to ensure that dispatches are to right location. 

  5.  Keeping the organization’s mission, vision and values at the forefront of all decision making and action. 

  6. Demonstrates the professional and technical skills necessary for the role, exhibiting both depth and breadth of expertise. Builds trust and confidence through respectful and credible interactions that reflect positively on personal integrity and the organization’s mission. 

  7. Adheres to uniform dress code requirements and employee ID badge is visible at all times while on duty. 

  8. Reports all unsafe conditions or work hazards; aware of environment; uses common sense, adheres to patient/visitor identification policies. Knowledge of and ability to employ required tools, techniques and technologies to minimize losses due to breaches of physical premises security 

  9.  Knowledge of and ability to implement the measures necessary to safeguard an organization’s employees and visitors. 

  10.  Participates appropriately in disaster drills; understands their role in emergency situations. 

  11.  Maintains familiarity with external vendors, service providers, contractors and others who conduct business with and or support hospital operations. Will escort and provide access to secure areas of the facility and ground as appropriate or when instructed to do so by their supervisor. 

  12.  Must be able to work various shifts as needed on short notice.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current California-issued security officer license, showing no disciplinary actions
  • High school diploma or equivalent; or three (3) years’ experience as a security officer
  • Six (6) months experience as a security officer in a hospital or healthcare setting, prior law enforcement or military service, or one (1) year experience as a security officer
  • Annual Workplace Violence training
  • Must be able to speak English, communicate clearly orally, and in writing; understand and use de-escalation techniques
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) within 90 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Completion of IAHSS Basic Training for Healthcare Security Officer within ninety (90) days preferred
