Responsibilities

The Sterile Processing Supervisor oversees the daily operations of the sterilization workroom, ensuring the highest standards of cleanliness, sterilization, and safety for all surgical instruments and supplies. This role requires strong leadership skills, a thorough understanding of sterile processing procedures, and a commitment to maintaining quality and compliance. The Supervisor is responsible for staff management, training, and adherence to all hospital and regulatory guidelines.

  • Supervise and Lead: Supervise, train, and mentor sterile processing staff, including scheduling, assigning daily tasks, and ensuring adherence to the union contract. Manage on-call responsibilities for weekends.
  • Maintain Competency & Training: Develop and maintain staff competencies, conduct in-services, and ensure staff are up-to-date on best practices.
  • Sterilization Expertise: Coordinate and demonstrate competence in all areas of preparation and sterilization, including decontamination, inspection, packaging, sterilization, storage, and distribution.
  • Quality Control: Perform and document quality control testing of sterilization parameters, maintaining accurate records and documentation.
  • Compliance & Safety: Ensure compliance with all hospital and departmental policies, protocols, procedures, and objectives, including quality assessment, legal, safety, environmental, and infection control standards. Maintain a safe work environment by adhering to OSHA standards for blood-borne pathogens and ensuring proper use of PPE.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Communicate effectively with surgical co-workers and supervisory staff to ensure seamless operating room activities. Participate in daily huddles and review the Communication Book daily.
  • Problem Solving: Demonstrate responsibility by seeking guidance and clarification when confronted with unfamiliar situations, utilizing appropriate resources and the chain of command.
  • Professional Development: Collaborate with the supervisor to identify professional development needs and attend required training programs and continuing education courses.
  • Mentorship: Act as a preceptor, mentor, and role model for other staff members, assisting with departmental orientation as needed.
  • Continuous Improvement: Demonstrate organizational skills, cost-consciousness, and a commitment to quality assurance in all job tasks.

Qualifications

  • Minimum three (3) years technical operating/instrument room experience, with prior supervisory experience required.
  • Above average interpersonal, communication and organizational skills. Fluent English language skills (verbal and written) required.
  • Must be committed to quality, patient care/customer service.
  • High School Graduate or GED equivalent required.
  • Bachelor's degree or a combination of education and/or additional job related experience may be substituted in lieu of the degree.
  • Certified International Association of Healthcare Central Service Management (IAHCSMM) and/or Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) required.
  • LA County Fire Card required within 90 days of hire and maintained during employment.
