Responsibilities

In addition to the general duties and responsibilities required of an RCP I which include demonstrating competence in patient care for pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients, performing arterial punctures, continuous ventilation, airway maintenance, emergency care, infection control, isolation procedures, maintenance and operation of mechanical ventilators, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and medical gas administration; the RCP II will be responsible for providing care for neonatal patients including intubation and/or resuscitation and will also have the opportunity to become certified in adult intubation.

Job Duties: 

  • Must be proficient to perform in all areas of the hospital. Respond to all areas of the hospital when needed.
  • Accurately document time spent with patients and bill accordingly. Must chart in real time and accurately charge patients for services rendered.
  • Be willing to act as a preceptor to newer employees, students, or staff upgrading their ICU skills, in-servicing co-workers and RNs.
  • Set up, maintains, performs and or monitors a variety of respiratory procedures to ill patients.
  • Completely assess all patients, including documentation according to department policy. Able to auscultate lungs, review patient charts and chart accurately for services offered.
  • Instruct and or educate patients and families about their pulmonary diseases while maintaining patient's confidentiality.
  • Responsible for providing care for neonatal patients including attending all deliveries, intubation, and resuscitation.
  • Responsible for performing EKG's on patients throughout the hospital setting.


Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

Education and Experience:

  • At least 2 years of clinical experience in an Acute Care setting, one of which must be in Intensive Care.
  • Graduate from a Respiratory Therapy Program, Registered Respiratory Therapist or Certified Respiratory Therapist.

Licensure: 

  • This position requires licensure by the State of California, Board of Medical Quality Assurance as a Respiratory Care Practitioner. 
  • Basic Life Support through AHA (BLS)
  • Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Adult Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

Special Skills:

  • Deal with agitated, ill, and uncomfortable patients, maintain confidence of patients, communicate effectively with patients and other members of the healthcare team, calm and reassure patients, work under stressful conditions with frequent interruption, keep accurate and complete records and work in harmony with other therapists.

Training: 

  • Anatomy, physiology, pathology, and pathophysiology of the cardio respiratory system, biomedical electronics, basic nmathematics, chemistry, physics, and psychology, pharmacology relating to respiratory therapy, respiratory care practice act, infection control.
