Responsibilities

Position Summary

The Certified Lead Pharmacy Technician is a key member of the pharmacy leadership team, assisting the Director of Pharmacy and pharmacy managers in the planning, management, and supervision of all operational activities related to the pharmacy technician staff.  The Lead Certified Pharmacy Technician functions in an advanced practice role as a pharmacy specialist within the pharmacy and on interdisciplinary teams.  The Lead Certified Pharmacy Technician, with pharmacy department leadership, will coordinate all functions related to technician activities that maintain and improve workflow, safety and efficiency to ensure quality distributive processes and services. The Lead Certified Pharmacy Technician is responsible for technician training, competency assessment, disciplinary action, regulatory compliance, scheduling, policy/procedures, oversight, and quality improvement activities.  The Lead Certified Pharmacy Technician may direct and coordinate technicians across multiple sites.  Must be self-motivated with effective organizational skills.

Position Responsibilities

  • Maintains a positive leadership role within the department.
  • Supervises and assists pharmacy technicians and other support staff effectively.
  • Conducts performance evaluation and competency assessment of pharmacy technicians.
  • Educates, mentors, and evaluates pharmacy technicians to develop and improve skills necessary for providing pharmaceutical care.  
  • Develops and provides educational programs, learning modules, and knowledge assessment tools.
  • Provides technical support for automated dispensing machines, carousel technology for automated medication inventory storage, and other pharmacy computer systems.
  • Performs all payroll and scheduling functions for all pharmacy coworkers under the direction of the Pharmacy Director.
  • Maintains appropriate controlled substance records.
  • Performs audits, investigations, and other tasks related to medication safety and potential medication diversion 
  • Responds to data requests from other clinical and/or regulatory departments
  • Assists in implementation of process changes.
  • Works with the Director of Pharmacy and Pharmacy Operations Manager to establish, implement, and monitor pharmacy goals and objectives.
  • Review and update policies as assigned 
  • Prepares, distributes, and enters data for monthly nursing unit inspections
  • Serves as a liaison with colleges of pharmacy, schedules and orients students visiting site on clinical rotation 
  • Assists with managing the drug formulary by ensuring operational and inventory efficient processes are in place and are followed.
  • HR liaison for the department of pharmacy 
  • Participates in departmental and organizational committees at the discretion of the Pharmacy Director

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy
  • Active CPT-EXCPT or CPT-PTCB or CPHT certification in good standing 
  • Minimum of four (4) years of Pharmacy Tech experience in a hospital setting
  • Two (2) years lead, supervisory, or management experience  (preferred)
