Responsibilities
Our Monitor Technicians make a significant impact on patient care by performing surveillance of cardiac rhythms at a central monitoring station, and for recognizing, recording and reporting potentially dangerous rhythm changes and arrhythmias in accordance with established standards and procedures. The duties of the role are primarily performed in a centralized monitoring unit, under the direction of a Registered Nurse.  
Great team members will make an impact in the organization through:
  • Monitoring patient’s cardiac rhythms and/or oxygen saturation using appropriate cardiac monitoring equipment; obtains a baseline ECG strip on all monitored patients according to department guidelines; records and posts cardiac strips in accordance with established procedures; may replace electrode pads, wires and batteries as necessary. Updates and verifies patient data in the information system; maintains unit/department specific records as assigned.
  • Recognizing rhythms with the potential to alter the patient’s physiology and obtains a documentary ECG strip; immediately reports all arrhythmias to the RN responsible for the patient in accordance with established protocols.
  • Acting as a resource for incoming and outgoing related communications by addressing questions and assisting staff in accordance with established procedures.
  • Ensures a safe work and patient environment, adhering to the hospital’s Safety, Risk Management and Regulatory Standards and if applicable infection prevention.
  • The opportunity to participate in quality assurance and improvement initiatives and activities for the department.

Qualifications

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department and with our clinical staff as required by the duties of the role.
Candidates will also need to meet the minimum qualifications through 1 of the 3 avenues outlined below:
  1. Three months of post-secondary education/training in regard to a cardiology-related field (e.g. cardiac monitoring, EKG technology, Emergency medicine, nursing, exercise science)
  2. Graduation from one of the following accredited programs, including EKG Interpretation: Nursing Assistant (or military medical specialty training), or Medical Assistant
  3. One year of recent related work experience that would demonstrate attainment of the requisite job knowledge/abilities to include EKG interpretation responsibilities.
**Successful completion of a Basic EKG test is required within 90 days of hire.**
Graduation from one of the following accredited programs, including EKG Interpretation (Preferred):
  • Monitor Technician
  • Health Unit Coordinator
  • Associate’s degree in EKG Technology
  • Work experience as Monitor Tech or Monitor Tech/HUC
