Responsibilities

- Provides supervision for daily operations of assigned Operating Room Technologists (ORT’s or Surgical Technologist).

- Ensures optimal daily workflow and allocation of resources to meet demand for OR services with available staff.
- Ensures smooth flow of Operating Room (OR) operations by directing the work of the Operating Room Technologists.

- Assigns and changes priorities within the work unit to assure efficiency and exceptional customer service.

- Acts as a resource to staff, providers, and other personnel for all daily operational needs.

  1. Recruits, hires, trains, disciplines, and supervises staff including completion of performance evaluations and competency assessments. Collaborates with Surgery Educator to maintain and update staff procedure manuals, staff training programs and quality assurance programs.
  2. Develops, modifies, implements, and evaluates operational processes for the ORT’s. Supports the OR scheduling process, assessing patient/surgery flow and supply ordering.
  3. Assists manager and section head with budget development and management. Assures cost-effective daily operations and allocation of section resource to optimize available staff with demand for service.
  4. Participates in improvement projects focused on achievement of annual goals and lean initiatives; ensures implementation of and adherence to improvement changes.
  5. Ensures compliance with state, federal and regulatory agency requirements for facilities, care and staff.

Qualifications

- Position requires completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist program and current registration with the state of Washington as a Surgical Technologist.

- Requires 5 years’ experience as an ORT in a large operating room which performs tertiary care and a willingness to be a part of a management team dedicated to improving surgical operations management, formalizing a professional ORT corps and improving patient care.

- Demonstrated ability to prioritize the demands of daily operations and organize resources required.

- Also requires demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills, active listening skills and conflict mediation ability.

- Demonstrated ability to facilitate change and build effective teams also required.

- Completion of Virginia Mason Production System (VMPS) for Leaders or willingness to do so when eligible or within 18 months of hire whichever comes first.

Preferred:

- Associates Degree or equivalent plus three years' increasingly responsible health care operations experience.
