Responsibilities
This position requires current registration as a pharmacy intern with the California State Board of Pharmacy and the following knowledge and abilities:  Knowledge: Demonstrated knowledge of legal restrictions on the activities of pharmacy interns; Federal and State regulations relating to pharmaceutical transactions; medical abbreviations pharmaceutical terminology and calculations; prescription processing; aseptic technique in the preparation of intravenous admixtures and total parenteral nutrition; safe handling of antineoplastic/chemotherapeutic agents generic or trade names of medication extemporaneous prescription compounding of sterile and non-sterile products.  Ability:   Provide education to patients staff and physicians in a professional manner.
The incumbent is responsible for technical clerical and transportation duties for the department and is involved with the preparation distribution and delivery of medication. The pharmacy intern also performs professional duties as related to The 4 Key Processes for Medication Usage (Prescribing Preparation and Dispensing Administering Monitoring.) All work is performed under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist. The pharmacy intern will also demonstrate competency in patient care for neonates pediatrics adolescents adults and geriatric patients. Upon graduation from Pharmacy School the Pharmacy Intern may transition into the Graduate Intern Pharmacist position.

Job Specific Duties
1.1 Prepares IV admixtures accurately using aseptic technique and properly labels, logs and initials final product. Measurement procedure: accuracy documented on daily IV shift Quality Assurance log; Exceeds (3) top quartile. Does Not Meet (1) Bottom quartile.
1.2 Fills unit dose orders timely and accurately, including extemporaneous compounding. Exceeds (3) top quartile. Does Not Meet (1) Bottom quartile.
1.3 Omnicell/floor stock medications are filled accurately and in a timely manner. Exceeds (3) top quartile. Does Not Meet (1) Bottom quartile.
1.4 Follows department narcotic sign-out and restocking procedure including investigation and documentation of discrepancies. Measured by compliance per year. Exceeds (3) top quartile. Does Not Meet (1) Bottom quartile.
1.5 Fills unit dose cassettes accurately and within allotted time standard set by department. Measurement procedure: Exceeds (3) top quartile. Does Not Meet (1) Bottom quartile.
1.6 Completes all job tasks for assigned shift on a daily basis.
1.7 Champions special projects or assignments each year. greater than 2 equal to score 3, less than 2 equal to score 1
1.8 Achieves annual performance goals. Exceeds (3): Achieved greater than or equal to 90% of goals. Does not meet (1): Achieves less than 80% of goals.
1.9 Keeps informed of departmental process changes through documentation of reading minutes, huddles, emails and other communication within one month of information posting or due date assigned. Exceeds (3): greater than or equal to 90% documentation. Does Not Meet (1): less than 80% documentation


Qualifications

REQUIRES:

  • Current registration as a pharmacy intern with the California State Board of Pharmacy.
  • Currently in pharmacy school
  • Demonstrated knowledge of legal restrictions on the activities of pharmacy interns, Federal and State regulations relating to pharmaceutical transactions, medical abbreviations, pharmaceutical terminology and calculations. Presription processing, aseptic technique in the preparation of intravenous admixtures and total parenteral nutrition. Safe handling of antineoplastic/chemotherapeutic agents, generic or trade names of medication, extemporaneous prescription compounding of sterile and non-sterile products.
