Responsibilities

The Chaplain's primary role is to provide spiritual care to patients' families personnel and medical staff by assisting them to integrate the experience of illness trauma and loss with their religious/spiritual beliefs and convictions. In so doing they become a witness of Christ's care for them. The Chaplain collaborates with other healthcare team members to promote comprehensive spiritual care from a holistic perspective. The Chaplain also works closely with community religious representatives acting as a liaison between hospice and faith communities to provide continuity of pastoral care. The Chaplain provides spiritual and emotional support for patients their families and staff.

 Excellent listening and communication skills that include an ability to articulate a developed personal spirituality based on a compassionate God. Ability to articulate and demonstrate their lifestyle which includes nurturing his or her own spirituality. Possesses the necessary resources to make available meaningful religious practices that respect the spirituality that each individual possesses which honors and facilitates the spiritual traditions of patients and families.


Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Masters Degree in Divinity or Theology or related field. 
  • Endorsement by a leader in their faith tradition.
  • Excellent listening and communication skills that include an ability to articulate a developed personal spirituality based on a compassionate God.
  • Clinical Pastoral Education and eligibility for certification by the National Association of Catholic Chaplains or the Association of Professional Chaplains is required within three (3) years or as agreed upon by the facility.

Preferred:

  • Working knowledge and understanding of legislation and healthcare workers' responsibilities regarding issues to include but not limited to Child/Elder/Domestic Abuse reporting Organ and Tissue procurement Advanced Directives and Patient Bill of Rights.
  • Understanding of the legal issues for all aspects of patient care.
