Responsibilities

Job Summary:

Under the supervision of a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist or a Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner, The Polysomnographer is responsible for the delivery of sleep lab services.

Essential Functions:

  • Primary functions and responsibilities include connecting sleep lab equipment to patients, ensuring sleep lab equipment and supplies are adequately maintained in stock as well as assisting with patient education to patients in outpatient settings if needed.  
  • Shall exhibit clinical and professional judgment, honesty, integrity and a high sense of responsibility.
  • Able to use tact and good judgment when dealing with physicians, nurses, and other hospital employees.
  • Verbal ability to explain various procedures to employees, patients and patients’ families is essential.
  • Must be able to make some independent judgments within the scope of the job and standards of care related to the job.  May be requested to work with Manager of Respiratory Services in carrying out standards of practice.
  • Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to adult and geriatric patients. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the ability to assess data reflective of the patients’ status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs.  This knowledge and skills may be acquired through education, training or experience.
  • The individual will be responsible to the Lead Polysomnographer and Respiratory Manager of Sleep Lab Services. They will work under the supervision of a sleep lab tech at all times.
  • Ability to communicate/relate to physicians, nurses, patients, fellow workers and all other hospital personnel.  Works closely with nursing personnel, other clinical staff such as pharmacy and rehabilitation services, other practitioners and physicians in patient assessment and respiratory care planning of patient care.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skill related to the Anatomy and Physiology as well as other sciences related to respiratory care/sleep lab.
  • Insures the delivery of services reflects efficient and effective use of sleep lab supplies and appropriate utilization of resources.  Maintains that unit is clean, neat and safe environment for patients and staff.
  • Insures supplies and equipment necessary for patient care are stored in an organized and efficient manner.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

  • AA in Polysomnography or grandfathered into the field of polysomnography

Required Licensure and Certifications:

  • Current AHA BLS certification
  • Current RPSGT

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must possess the fundamental knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One to two (1-2) years of experience
