Responsibilities

Speech Therapist I - Speech Therapy 

St. John's Regional Medical Center

If you are passionate about providing great care building effective therapy programs to enhance our patient’s recovery and potential and want to be part of a dynamic and high energy team this could be the position for you! As a Speech Therapist I you will be responsible for administering outpatient diagnostic and treatment programs designed to comprehensively evaluate and treat injured and disabled patients to restore maximum communicative function.

  • Identifies and reports patient abuse and neglect i.e.: physical assault domestic abuse and neglect of elders and children.
  • Accurately identifies patient's functional deficits/dysfunction through review of the medical record through observation of the patient through information obtained from the patient/family and through assessment of expressive/receptive language motor speech cognitive/linguistic hearing voice and swallowing and other speech therapy assessment techniques. 
  • Communicates regularly with other members of the healthcare team regarding goals progress and rehab potential.
  • Works as a collaborative member of the treatment team.
  • Terminates treatment appropriately and plans for the patient's discharge in adequate time for appropriate referrals to be made.
  • Consistently and accurately documents care of the patient on day care is delivered using both hospital and department policies.
  • Uses clear concise and objective data.
  • Formulates a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning. Family is included in teaching as appropriate. 
  • Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly and is knowledgeable in care and maintenance of all therapy equipment in department.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of a care plan through regular written progress notes as per department policy and modifies the plan as needed.
  • Uses creativity and skill in effectively designing an appropriate care plan in collaboration with the patient.
  • Formulates realistic and appropriate short/long term treatment goals.
  • Makes appropriate recommendations regarding the patient's plan of care to the physician case managers nursing and other health care team members.
  • Demonstrates correct technique/procedure for completion of video fluoroscopy including assessment recommendations and follow through with family physician and other disciplines involved with patient.

Qualifications
  • Must possess or be eligible to possess a current valid California State license in Speech Pathology. (Lic. SLP)
  • Current AHA BLS.
  • Demonstrates good interpersonal skills and the ability to work tactfully and effectively with fellow staff members physicians hospital departments and the general public.
  • Demonstrates competent working knowledge of the principles standard practices procedures and equipment utilized in the department.
  • Ability to work independently and be a functional team member in a team oriented environment.
  • Ability to be flexible with caseload within any given day as needed for the benefit of the department.

This position is represented by L121 PRO and is covered by the terms and conditions of the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
