With more than 600 licensed beds, CHI St. Vincent Infirmary is a faith-based, not-for-profit organization serving the health care needs of Arkansans, including patients from all 75 counties. CHI St Vincent Infirmary offers a full array of cardiovascular care including adult heart surgery. An integral part of this care is mechanical circulatory support which includes ECMO, LVAD, IABP, and Impella. An MCS RN is educated in adherence to MCS guidelines to manage the MCS
device and patient including blood pump, tubing, artificial oxygenator, and related equipment. The MCS RN works under qualified medical direction and supervision via the MCS Team and Physician.

Responsibilities
  • Proficiently cares for and assists in the patient and MCS device in which the patient is currently on.
  • Proficiently performs safety checks on MCS devices and understands the appropriate steps when an unexpected or emergency situation occurs.
  • Monitors pump functioning throughout patient therapy and maintains pump integrity; monitors circuit volume and administers products, medications and/or volumes as ordered; monitors anticoagulation, electrolyte acid-base balance and blood gas composition volumes and adjusts MCS device to maintain physician orders.
  • Recommends appropriate changes to current patient management based on new information or changing patient status.
  • Generates and compiles appropriate documentation related to MCS.
  • Operates point of care laboratory equipment; interprets and acts on results based upon physician orders.
  • With the MCS coordinator, Intensivist APRN or perfusion sets up and primes ECMO circuits; initiates and maintains extracorporeal life support according to protocols.
  • With the MCS coordinator, Intensivist APRN or perfusion assists with logistics of cannulation, decannulation, and in-house transport of patients on MCS.

Qualifications
  • Associate's Degree in Nursing required; Bachelor's Degree preferred
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Arkansas or current multistate license from a Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC) member state
  •  1 years of experience as an RN/PCC in the CVICU and MCS
  •  Must be competent in the following roles: charge nurse and preceptor
  •  Must be proficient in the following devices/surgeries: ECMO, LVAD, impellas, CRRT, IABP, swan ganz, and recovery of open heart surgery
  •  The MCS RN must maintain competency by attending quarterly simulation (16 hours per quarter) and annual hospital competency verification (24 hours)
