Overview

Responsibilities

This position is responsible for pre-analytic, analytic and post analytic collection and processing of samples.  Must be able to properly maintain and operate instrumentation and equipment.  Will perform quality control and interpret results as well as follow up with corrective action when needed.  Will perform patient testing, review results and release results accurately into the Laboratory Information System (LIS). Will run proficiency testing samples as required by compliance. Other responsibilities will include answering phone calls and ordering testing in the LIS.

This position will also act as a lead in a department or departments within the laboratory.  These responsibilities will include policy/procedure creation and maintenance, oversight of quality control and maintenance records, submission of proficiency testing samples, training of new employees and competency assessment.

Essential Key Job Responsibilities

  1. Interpret laboratory labels for blood collection
  2. Perform venipunctures, capillary punctures to include heelsticks and fingersticks and arterial punctures
  3. Collect blood cultures aseptically
  4. Utilize all collection devices including syringes, vacutainers and needles
  5. Perform patient testing on various samples to include urine, blood and stool
  6. Develop and maintain policy/procedures within department(s)
  7. Establish and maintain quality control program within department(s)
  8. Establish and maintain proficiency sample testing within department(s)
  9. Establish and maintain training and competency assessment within department(s)
  10. Establish and maintain maintenance plan for instrumentation within department(s)
  11. Order tests in the LIS system
  12. Communicating with patients, providers and co-workers
  13. Prepare samples and paperwork to send out to reference lab
  14. Follow infection control practices according to policy
  15. Other duties as assigned by management

Qualifications

Required 

Bachelor of Science Degree

Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist Certification recognized by American Society of Clinical Pathologists, American Medical Technologist or American Association of Biolanalysts within 6 months of hire

Preferred

6-12 months lab experience which may include internship
