Responsibilities

JOB SUMMARY / PURPOSE

Radiation therapists deliver radiation to patients for therapeutic purposes. Provide appropriate patient care and safety; apply problem-solving and critical thinking skills in the administration of prescribed treatment protocols, tumor localization, and dosimetry; and maintain appropriate patient records. Particularly concerned with the principles of radiation protection for the patient, themselves, and others while performing these responsibilities accepts responsibility for administering a prescribed course of radiation therapy, providing the patient care during treatment, and maintaining treatment records. Evaluate and assess treatment delivery components, evaluate and assess the daily physiologic and psychologic responsiveness of the patient, and ensure quality care for patients undergoing radiation therapy. Additional duties may include tumor localization, dosimetry, patient follow-up, and patient education.

ESSENTIAL KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Follow the prescriptions of radiation oncologists to work out a treatment plan that delivers the precise radiation dosage to the localized area.

2. Localize the treatment volume using simulators and/or CAT scans.

3. Develop patient treatment plans using the localization data and dedicated planning computers.

4. Explain procedures to patients.

5. Position patients on treatment couches.

6. Identify surface bones and measure and outline with a skin marker the area where the radiation beam is to enter the patient.

7. Displays knowledge and complies with the National Patient Safety Goals.

8. Contributes to improving clinical patient safety.

9. Provides on call services as assigned.

10. Other duties as assigned by management.


Qualifications

Required Education for Staff Job Levels: Graduate of an accredited school of Radiologic Technology

Required Licensure and Certifications: * Must be registered by the ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologist). * State of Kentucky License required.

* BLS within 30 days of employment.

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of all radiation oncology techniques, oncologic pathology, anatomy and physiology, treatment planning procedures and dosimetry. Must have detailed knowledge of all equipment and computers utilized in the department.
