Overview

The Surgical First Assistant practices under the direction of the surgeon during the Perioperative phase. Uses and Discloses patient protected health information: 1) Only as it applies to job functions, 2) in amounts minimally necessary for intended purpose and 3) in a confidential manner.


Responsibilities

$20,000 Sign on Bonus

Up to $7,000 Education Assistance Available

  • Has knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology and operative techniques related to first assisting.
  • Will meet the Surgical First Assistant competencies of department and the National Certified Surgical Tech First Assistant organization. 
  • Must possess skill in the following behaviors:
  • Tissue manipulation/use of instruments:  consists of the handling of tissue and appropriate selection and use of surgical instruments to assure proper treatment of tissue, decreased incidence of infections and rapid healing of the surgical site.  
  • Retraction:  selection and placement of appropriate retraction of instruments to assist the surgeon by providing exposure, optimum visualization and prevention of tissue/organ injury at the operative site.  
  • Wound Closure:  The State of Nebraska does not recognize that wound closure is an appropriate standard of practice for an unlicensed clinician/technician (such as a CST) or a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), and there are no state regulations governing the practice of the Surgical Tech First Assist.  Therefore, wound closure for the First Assist is only permitted for RNFA’s as outlined in this addendum.
  • Hemostasis: use of surgical techniques at the operative site, which will promote adequate visual assessment of and access to the operative site; prevent blood loss, decrease operative time and promote wound healing.  
  • Acts as a preceptor in orientation of new staff & provides frequent updates of progress throughout orientation period.
  • Maintain and update self-knowledge base including clinical aspects and educational techniques, contributes to updating orientation manuals and evaluation tools.

Qualifications

Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology First Assist program

Current BLS Certification.

Current CSTFA/CSFA Certification

Two years of a scrubbing/assisting experience within the last four years
