Responsibilities

With the required oversight and supervision by their advanced-practice counterparts, performs complete evaluations of
the respiratory system including patient history and tests of pulmonary function, may also include physical
examinations, arterial blood gas analysis and chest x-ray examinations. The primary purpose of pulmonary function
testing is to identify the severity of pulmonary impairment. Pulmonary function testing has diagnostic and therapeutic
uses to answer some general questions about patients with lung disease, and/or: Chronic shortness of breath; Asthma;
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; Restrictive lung disease; Preoperative testing; Impairment or disability.


ESSENTIAL KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
 Prepare testing rooms: perform daily calibrations on instruments each morning and maintains log of daily
calibrations. Prepares and maintains supplies and equipment for testing, including sterilization. Orders,
monitors and maintains PFT supplies and equipment. Check expiration dates on stock and drugs.
 Maintains timely flow of patients. Ensures preferences are given to patients in emergency situations. Assists
physician prior to testing, treatment, and physical examination of patients. Routes testing results with
appropriate patient chart to physician for review. At physician’s direction, performs Six Minute Walk Test
according to ATS Standards. Reports to Physician regarding patient medical problems, treatments, and
diagnosis.
 At physician’s direction, performs and oversees all Pulmonary Function Tests “PFT” (i.e. including Spirometry,
Lung Volume, and DLCO) according to ATS Standards. Greets patients and prepares patients for PFT, using
established procedures for patient care and safety. Screen patients for appropriate information. Maintains
patients’ and employees’ privacy and confidentiality. Respectfully instructs patient when performing the study
and throughout the testing to ensure accurate results. Ensures equipment is in working order, reporting any
equipment malfunctions to the Medical Director. Logs ordered tests and PFT completed and verifies receipt of
reports. Processes routine paper work, and maintains files and records.
 Manages clinical services in accordance with office, governmental, and other regulatory standards. Establishes
and maintains system for assuring quality in clinical services, including compliance with OSHA and CLIA
regulations. Attends educational and professional development activities to stay current with applicable rules
and regulations.
 Reports to Manager regarding business and administrative matters, and performs other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Required Education

 High school education or Equivalent is required.

Required Licensure and Certifications

 NBRC-CPFTE — Certification examination for
Pulmonary Function Technology is required and must
be maintained.
 NBRC-RPFTE — Registry examination is required and
must be maintained.
 Basic Life Support (BLS) or Basic Life Support (BLS) and
Advanced Care Life Support (ACLS) certification is
required.
