Responsibilities

JOB SUMMARY:

This job is responsible, as a member of the radiation oncology team, for designing treatment plan(s) and accurately calculating the delivery of radiation treatment based on the prescribed course of radiation therapy and according to established standards and practices.  Work focuses on designing, developing, measuring, calculating, calibrating and isodose distributions for patients undergoing radiation therapy under the direction of the Radiation Oncologist/Medical Physicist.  Work also includes patient data acquisition/transfer, treatment evaluation, accurate treatment delivery and quality management for assigned patients.

An incumbent applies knowledge of the overall characteristics and clinical relevance of radiation oncology in the management of cancer or other disease process, with special expertise in radiation treatment planning.  Work also includes responsibility for: 1) processing of patient data acquisition; 2) treatment planning for administration of ionizing radiation; 3) treatment evaluation; 4) transfer of data from the treatment planning system into the patient record; 5) fabrication of various treatment immobilization devices; and 6) verifying software, accurate treatment delivery and quality management for radiation oncology patients.  In addition, an incumbent may perform or assist the licensed practitioner and/or Medical Physicist within scope of licensure.

Work requires knowledge of radiobiology, radiation physics, radiation safety/hazardous waste management and patient positioning as well as expertise with a variety of radiation machines/equipment.  Also requires knowledge of cancer disease processes and related human/imaging anatomy.  Incumbents are also accountable for maintaining knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate journals, books and other literature and attending related seminars and conferences.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

  • Performs treatment assessment and planning to all patient groups in accordance with the physician treatment plan; develops the Dosimetry Treatment Plan Report. (70%)
  • Develops patient set up documentation for implementation by Radiation Therapy staff; performs CT Simulation and data transfer activities. (20%)
  • Performs Quality Assurance (QA) measurement and administration activities per established standards and practices; chairs bi-monthly department Quality Improvement Committee meeting.  (5%)  
  • Performs clinical duties associated with medical dosimetry as needed within scope of licensure.  (5%)

Qualifications

Education/Work Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline, graduation from an accredited medical dosimetry program, and three years of related work experience that would demonstrate attainment of the requisite job knowledge/abilities.

Licensure/Certification:

  • Certified Medical Dosimetrist or Certified Medical Dosimetrist-eligible, with CMD required six months from date of hire.
  • Current licensure as a Certified Radiological Technologist/Therapeutic - (Required) in Washington State.
  • Current healthcare provider BLS (AHA) certification.
