Responsibilities

1. Leadership and Supervision:

  • Overseeing Nursing Staff: The Charge Nurse supervises and coordinates the activities of other nurses and healthcare staff 
  • Staff Scheduling and Assignment: The Charge Nurse assigns nursing duties, ensures adequate staffing levels, and addresses any concerns related to workload distribution.
  • Problem-Solving and Decision-Making: In situations where complications arise, the Charge Nurse is responsible for making quick and informed decisions to ensure patient safety and well-being.

2. Quality Assurance and Patient Safety:

  • Ensuring High Standards of Care: They work to ensure that high-quality, evidence-based care that adheres to the hospital’s protocols and guidelines.
  • Handling Emergencies: In emergency situations, such as complications plays a crucial role in initiating emergency protocols and coordinating the team for swift action.
  • Collaboration with Physicians and Specialists: The Charge Nurse communicates and collaborates with physicians and other departments

3. Team Communication and Coordination:

  • Facilitating Communication: As a leader, the Charge Nurse ensures that information is communicated clearly and effectively among the nursing team and other healthcare professionals
  • Serving as a Liaison: The Charge Nurse also acts as a liaison between the medical team and families, answering questions and providing updates 

4. Advocacy:

  • Advocating for Patient Needs: The Charge Nurse ensures that both the mother and newborn are receiving the best possible care and that their voices are heard in the decision-making process.
  • Promoting Family-Centered Care: They foster a family-centered care environment, encouraging the participation of partners and other family members in the care and bonding process.

In summary, the Charge Nurse in a OR setting is a crucial figure who provides leadership, ensures clinical care the patient, advocates for the patient's needs, and maintains a high standard of quality and safety in the unit. 


Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

Two years RN experience within applicable clinical specialty

Charge Nurse experience preferred

Current AZ State RN license in good standing 

Current BLS healthcare provider card 

ACLS obtained within six months of hire into position.
