Work with a 22 year old Health Information Exchange organization, founded in 1996 and is still growing and expanding.

The Santa Cruz health information exchange was the first in California (1996), one of twelve original health information exchanges in the United States, and one of the three that survive today. Initially formed as a local initiative by Dominican Hospital and the Physicians Medical Group, the Santa Cruz exchange grew to include 2,000 users from hospitals, practices, federally qualified health centers, and County agencies. In 2017, the IPA spun out the exchange, which became an independent 501(c)(3) public benefit company funded by initial capital and ongoing access fees and grants.

Today, the Santa Cruz Health Information Organization (SCHIO) provides an array of services beyond ‘Classic HIE’ and serves approximately 400,000 patient lives in Santa Cruz County and from surrounding areas. We have recently expanded into social detriments of health (SDOH) and social referrals, such as housing, transportation, and food insecurities. SCHIO connects to the national networks, eHealth Exchange and Carequality, and connects to California’s prescription drug reporting system, immunization registry, and disease reporting registry, as well as regional university laboratories and hospitals.

This is a remote work opportunity working Monday - Friday, 8 am to 5 pm, Pacific Time.


Implements and supports interfaces between healthcare systems and Health Information Exchanges.


  • Develop, test and implement interfaces based on standards and customer requirements.
  • Maintain and support existing interfaces.
  • Analyze and document customer requirements and business workflow for integration of disparate healthcare systems.
  • Configure and test new interfaces between healthcare groups.
  • Document interface implementations and configurations.
  • Provide excellent customer service and maintain excellent customer relationships.
  • Identify and resolve interface related issues in a timely manner.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience with PIX, PDQ, XDS b, and CCDA, integration engine technologies, database queries using PostgressSQL or MSSQL, and API integration

  • More than 3 years of system integration experience in healthcare environment, or equivalent.

  • Experience with JavaScript, MS C# programming language.

  • Proficiency in HL7 v 2 interface specifications/message standards.

  • Ability to clearly document interface specifications and configurations, broad based knowledge of computer OS, applications and networking technologies.

  • Working knowledge of HL7.

  • NextGen/Mirth Certification or ability to attain NextGen/Mirth Certification within 90 days of hire

  • A self-motivated quick learner who works well with other members of the team, well organized and detail-oriented, capable of juggling multiple concurrent tasks successfully

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands on experience with Mirth channels/connect/interface engine and configuration preferred

Compensation Includes:

A compensation range of $60,000 - $85,000 is the reasonable estimate that CommonSpirit in good faith believes it might pay for this particular job based on the circumstances at the time of posting. CommonSpirit may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range as permitted by law.
