For more than 70 years, Mercy Medical Center Redding has offered comprehensive health care in the North State, providing acute care and a full range of medical services.  The 267-bed hospital offers major medical services including a Level II Trauma Center as well as specialized Cardiovascular Care, Stroke Care, Orthopedics, Neurological Surgery, Comprehensive Cancer Care, Maternity Care, and da Vinci Robotic Surgery.  It is the sole provider of obstetrical services, along with the only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Shasta County.  In addition, the hospital’s network of care includes Mercy Home Health and Hospice and Dignity Health Connected Living.  Mercy Medical Center Redding is a member of the Dignity Health system and is a sister facility to St. Elizabeth Community Hospital in Red Bluff and Mercy Medical Center Mt. Position summary:

This 12-16 week transition-to-practice program is for the new graduate registered nurse (RN).  Since its inception in 2011, the goal of this program has been to help the new graduate RN move from the role of student to practitioner by implementing progressive independence in the clinical area.

**Speciality areas offer extended programs up to 6 months (Progressive Care Unit, and Trauma ICU)**

The program will start with 8 hour days, 5 days per week, then move to three 12 hour shifts.  

After program completing, the nurse will move into full-time, 12 hour positions in their assigned unit" with a dedicated preceptor

Residency Program Start:  February 2023

What is this program like?

As a RN Resident, you will be hired into the facility as a full-time employee. You will be supported professionally and emotionally by a network of expert nurses who act as teachers, preceptors, mentors, and educators.  Upon successful completion of this paid RN Residency, you'll be prepared to work as an independent, professional RN on your home unit, The Rock Solid RN Residency program is the is the best way for you to gain the experience, skills, judgement, and confidence you'll need to thrive in your new career as a professional nurse.

  • Work with a preceptor and assume increasing responsibility during the program
  • Demonstrate competencies in populations served at completion of program
  • Assess, diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate patient’s care to achieve patient goals and to optimize outcomes
  • Effectively advocate for ethical and holistic care by partnering in care planning to promote the autonomy, dignity, rights, values and beliefs of those we serve
  • Foster a learning environment for patient/families, nursing, and other members of the healthcare team including students
  • Align practice with safety and quality, be accountable for safety, identify and correct problems
  • Engage in ongoing professional development; promote a culture of inquiry that explores, integrates and disseminates research and evidence-based practice

What department will I be placed in?  Department assignments are based on several criteria, including background of the RN and the staffing needs of the department.  Department assignments will be determined by the interview team prior to the start date.

Upon successful completion of the program, the RN will be placed in full-time, benefitted positions within one of the departments listed below:

  • Medical Acute
  • Surgical Acute
  • Orthopedics
  • Oncology
  • Telemetry IMCU
  • Neuro Telemetry
  • Trauma ICU
  • Progressive Care Unit**

Minimum Qualifications for this program:

  1. Must be a graduate of an accredited nursing program with a 3.0 G.P.A. or higher AND have graduated in 2022.  Candidates with a BSN preferred. We welcome A.D.N. candidates that are on track to complete their BSN by 2026
  2. Must have a current California RN license and an AHA BLS-HCP certification PRIOR to program start date - we require Interim Permits if NCLEX results are pending.
  3. If you are offered a position in our Neuro Tele unit, Telemetry IMCU, or Progressive Care Unit,  you MUST have ACLS prior to your start date. It is highly recommended to have ACLS regardless of unit of hire

  • 2 references, in letter form, written by a current or former co-worker, manager/boss, clinical instructor, someone you volunteered with, or a preceptor from one of your clinical rotations.  These letters MUST be submitted with your application by you. We DO NOT need a sealed letter from the reference.  Letters do not need to be on official letterhead.
