Job Summary - Research Engineer I

The Barrow Innovation Center is focused on providing educational and engineering resources to neurosurgery residents for development of innovative medical technologies. We are seeking a motivated independent organized and technically skilled Research Engineer.

The position is focused on working with neurosurgery residents to design and develop new medical technologies through rapid prototyping. An ideal candidate for this position will have a biomedical engineering background with experience and knowledge of additive manufacturing casting and machining CAD material properties and neuroanatomy/neurophysiology. The candidate should also be familiar with the intellectual property process FDA regulations and clinical research.

Primary Job Responsibilities

● Perform research and development activities while keeping organized and detailed documentation of the design process

● Conduct market research and prior art searches

● Maintain equipment through preventative maintenance and repairs (ULS laser system FMD 3D printers SLA 3D printers)

● Conduct rapid prototyping using 3D modeling software (SolidWorks) and various manufacturing methods: 3D printing silicone/urethane mold making and casting machining

● Perform benchtop feasibility and verification testing Key Requirements

● Proficiency in parametric 3D modeling preferably SolidWorks and experience with freeform sculpting software such as Meshmixer

● Experience with 3D printing (FDM and SLA) including associated slicing software (Simplify3D Preform)

● Programming skills (e.g. Python C++ LabView) are desired for automating testing schemes using microcontrollers such as Arduinos and DAQ devices

● Task planning coordination prioritization and budgeting

● Excellent verbal and written communication skills

● Demonstrated problem solving skills

● Knowledge of neuroanatomy/neurophysiology and basic neurosurgical procedures/surgical tools is a plus



Experience in biomedical engineering or related field required.
Two (2) years experience in electrical, biomedical, or mechanical engineering; advanced mathematics or physics; statistics; or related field preferred.

Bachelor's degree required.

Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Google Office products preferred.
Programming skills (e.g. Python C++ LabView) preferred
