Laboratory Assistant – Clinical Laboratory Services
Northridge Hospital Medical Center
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented laboratory assistant to join our team. The laboratory assistant will work under the supervision of the laboratory manager and will be responsible for carrying out experiments preparing and maintaining laboratory equipment and supplies and keeping accurate records of experimental results. The successful candidate will be expected to work independently and as part of a team to ensure the smooth operation of the laboratory. - Laboratory assistants may be responsible for the following responsibilities for moderate complexity testing according to 42 CFR 493.1423-42 CFR 493.1425. The testing personnel as a laboratory assistant for moderate complexity testing are responsible for specimen processing and loading of moderate complexity equipment. Each individual performs only those moderate complexity tests that are authorized by the laboratory director and require a skill commensurate with the individual's education training or experience and technical abilities.
- Accountable for answering telephones releasing results by telephone or facsimile and directs calls as needed.
- Processes in-patient outpatient and client specimens. May direct outpatients as necessary.
- May be responsible for billing hospital in-patients and outpatients clients and reference laboratory testing as needed.
- Pathology laboratory assistants are responsible for collecting and maintaining logs for all pathology specimens preparing and organizing cassettes and filing of all slides. Pathology laboratory assistants are not required to perform phlebotomy
- For personnel with phlebotomy certification accountable for the receipt or procurement of proper patient samples using proper techniques and methods for venipunctures on adults and children and capillary methods on adults children and newborns.
- The laboratory assistant must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care relative to the patient's age-specific needs.
- Adheres to all hospital and laboratory safety and infection control policies and exercises appropriate precautions with patients specimens equipment and supplies.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalency.
- One (1) year laboratory clerical and/or phlebotomy experience in an acute care facility required.
- If the external market doesn't allow us to find a Laboratory Assistant with one year Phlebotomy experience we can waive the experience requirement and train someone who has the phlebotomy certificate.
- Must have knowledge of medical terminology
- Phlebotomy training must meet needs of newborn through geriatric populations.
- California Phlebotomy Technician License (CT Phlebotomy) required.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support Certification (AHA BLS) required.
- Fire Safety Card (CT Fire Card) required. (must obtain 90 days from hire date)
This position is represented by SEIU-UHW and is covered by the terms and conditions of the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
