Responsibilities
Position Summary:
Under the guidance of the Market Director of Respiratory Services, established departmental policies and procedures, and specific instructions, the Registered Respiratory Therapist provides care to those suffering from acute and chronic respiratory disease. Maintains patient safety through attention to detail, equipment safety checks, adherence to department policies, and effective communication with physicians, staff and patients. Provides patient orientation, procedure explanation, and pre and post diagnostic care to completion of test. Assists patients with basic patient care needs. Displays professional, safe conduct in all interactions. Maintains positive working relationships with staff, other departments, physicians and peers. Displays conduct in support of CHI St. Luke’s Health Memorial Mission & Vision.

- Works to reflect the highest achievable quality as defined by departmental and professional standards.
- Responsible for performing job duties in accordance with mission vision and values of CHI St Luke’s Health Memorial.
- Participates in hospital/departmental quality projects that enhance their skills and patient care outcomes.
- Participates in hospital/departmental educational programs as required.
- Accountable for certifications and records required to perform job.
- Will represent CHI St. Luke’s Health in physician, community relations and vendors in a professional/accountable manner.
- Administering therapy modalities which include, but are not limited to, Hand held Nebulizer (HHN), HHN via metered dose inhaler (HHN/MDI), Intrapulmonary Percussive Ventilation (IPV), Chest Physical Therapy (CPT), Pentamidine therapy. Medication administration may be included during these therapy modalities.
- Administering medical gas therapy including oxygen and Helium-Oxygen Therapy (HeO2.
- Performs ventilation therapies, including maintenance and management of life support systems. These therapies are comprised of non-invasive and invasive ventilation therapies, as well as transport of ventilator patients to diagnostic procedures.
- Performs physiological monitoring and diagnostic testing including, ABG puncture, bronchoscopy assistance, apnea monitoring, capnography, and pulse oximetry.
- Performs specialized procedures which including but are not limited to, CPR, bronchial lavage, transport, artificial and tracheostomy airway care, and ambulation.
- Documenting all patient care accurately and completely in the required departmental documentation system.
- Serve as resource to certified respiratory therapists, preceptor for new employees, and respiratory care students.
- Supports department-based goals and contributes to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
- Rotates weekend/call responsibilities in a professional and accountable fashion if applicable.
- Maintains proficiency in all areas of department and provides support when needed.
- Performs duties in accordance with that of hospital policies and procedures, and regulatory agency guidelines.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education Level Required:
High School Diploma/GED &
Completion of a Respiratory Care Degree Program, which is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care.
Licensure/Certification Required:
Licensed as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) through the Texas Medical Board (TMB) &
Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) through the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) &
BLS certification (through an approved AHA program) &
ACLS certification (through an approved AHA program) – *Must be obtained within 90 days of hire &/or transfer into position.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Excellent working knowledge of all Respiratory Care procedures/techniques
Exceptional customer service and interpersonal skill
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including problem solving
