Job Summary / Purpose

The Hyperbaric Safety Technician is responsible for administering hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy and diagnostic testing to patients of the Wound Care Center, under supervision of a hyperbaric physician.  All therapeutic and diagnostic modalities will be ordered by the hyperbaric physician.   

Essential Key Job Responsibilities

  1. Performs daily opening and closing checklists as well as weekly checklist. Records every chamber cycle on cycle log.  Assures that an annual maintenance is performed on chambers.  Works with Hospital Maintenance and Biomed departments to assure all maintenance is completed annually and recorded.
  2. Performs quality control daily on department glucometer and performs glucose monitoring as ordered and indicated by patient diagnosis.
  3. Implements the physician’s orders as indicated by the patient’s treatment plan.
  4. Inspect the patient prior to the commencement of each HBO treatment to ensure all safety standards are being adhered to, i.e. 100% cotton attire, no makeup, no hairspray, deodorant, lotions, jewelry, etc.
  5. Performs HBO treatment and monitors the patient during therapy.
  6. Performs dressing changes and/or wound care within scope of practice, as ordered and participate in clinic when HBO volumes are below par.
  7. Takes serial photographs of the wound for reporting of the patient’s progress.
  8. Conducts fire/emergency drill quarterly in HBO Suite. Educates staff and includes staff in drill.
  9. Responsible for ensuring all back-up chamber operators have maintained competency by completing three treatments/quarter and a daily startup/shutdown and weekly checklist per quarter. Completes an annual HBO competency. Responsible for annual training of EVS staff.
  10. Reviews any adverse events within the HBO suite with Medical Director, Clinic Director and Clinic Nurse Supervisor.
  11. Evaluate the patient outcome and meet with the manager and the hyperbaric physician to discuss patient treatment and adjust treatment as necessary.
  12. Document treatment notes and maintain patient treatment/diagnostic records.
  13. Responsible for patient treatment charges and reconciling charges.
  14. Answer telephone inquiries and schedule patient treatment times.
  15. Maintains a clean environment in the HBO suite and chamber. Utilizes approved chamber disinfectant approved by the chamber manufacturer.  Labels disinfectant container appropriately (date, expiration, PPE required, contact time.  Reports to the EOC Committee as necessary or requested.
  16. Participates in staff meetings and prepares and presents any needed in-services or news regarding HBO.
  17. Acts in the role of safety officer within the HBO Suite.
  18. Ascertain that the patient’s diagnosis in one for the appropriate approved disorders for HBO Therapy, and that the said diagnosis is clearly entered in the patient’s chart/record.
  19. Maintains a safe environment and follows all Hospital and NHC policies and procedures.

Required Licensure and Certifications

Current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA),


Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Minimum of two (2) years of experience in healthcare.
